The Globe and Wings
Devon Shinkle

These two emblems sit side by side
Divided by their brothers, their sisters, and the hollowed battle fields they call home
One is as old as its home, under the stars and stripes
Its history forged in the battle for freedom since its induction
It’s a bold promise to the world that it will engage the enemy’s of liberty on any medium
In the Air, Land, and Sea
The other, the youngest of this hard-edged clan, lives among the clouds
Its silver wings a reminder of the modern age in which we currently reside
They search the heavens for new life
And rain death from the skies they prowl
How can these symbols of liberty coincide?
One as ancient as the ideology it defends
The other as new as the crafts they weld into the new millennium
One the battle hardened son’s Ares
The other the wise intimidating children of Athena
Can peace be found in these polar opposites?
They’re mission the same yet they’re methods as different as the sun and the moon
Yet at the end of the day when all the dust is settled
They fight the same fight, bleed the same blood
They’re fallen brethren Draped under the same flag
In the defense of the worlds most precious need
Freedom
