Should Have Slept

by Mariah Hakimian

It is midnight, we should be sleeping
Instead we watched a movie on the couch
The movie is over, the credits are rolling
We should be sleeping

Instead we lay, listening to the music
Your breath is steady as you rub,
Intoxicatingly guiding me to a place unknown
When your last breath on this earth
Reaches my face, all sensibility is lost
We should be sleeping

My breath is surprisingly steady
as my fingers run through your hair
Finding myself, lost, in the new aroma
Your breath gets heavy
As I guide your hand to my face
Ten, nine, eight
Our actions will defy gravity, time, space
Seven, We should be sleeping

Six, Our bodies entwine as our eyes
Lock in an unfamiliar gaze
Five, suddenly our breath stops, eyes close
Four, three, two
This is it, we have liftoff, our first kiss
Houston, we should be sleeping

Instead we made a movie about space travel
Though we should have never left
For it was a tragedy, we crash landed back to earth
We should have slept
